CNY Day 3: Seringat-Kias

It's CNY Day 3 and we are at the reclaimed shores of Seringat-Kias, which is also connected to Lazarus Island.

We enjoyed the pinkish sunset after the rain that poured when we arrived! There's a bloom of the Sea lettuce (Ulva sp.) seaweed that covered the intertidal stretches of the shore.

Seringat-Kias over 2 years with star surprise

This is a long overdue post of our trip to Seringat-Kias last month (Aug 2015) and also last year (Nov 2014) with lovely surprise of Knobbly sea stars (Protoreaster nodosus).

The seagrasses are doing well on the reclaimed shores of Seringat-Kias when we visited last month. To top it up, there were several Knobbly sea stars! :D

Exploring a new stretch of Seringat-Kias

On one of the last few morning low tide trips of the year, we visited Seringat-Kias and Lazarus this morning. Ivan and myself decided to explore a lagoon that we rarely visit and it was my first time checking this part of the shore out.

The waters are rather deep in the lagoon and there were quite a number of marine critters swimming around such as this tiny and cute squid!

Lobster at Seringat-Kias!

We saw a living lobster among the seawall of Seringat-Kias on our predawn trip this morning!

Like the normal size of an adult lobster, it was relative quite big and I was surprised when I stumbled upon this charismatic creature which we rarely see on our intertidal trips. Despite being a reclaimed shore, Seringat-Kias holds lots of suprises!

Anemone hunt at Seringat-Kias

It's the weekend and I'm out on the shores again with our sea anemone expert Dr Dahpne and the anemone army. Instead of looking for sea anemones on a natural shore, we headed for the reclaimed sandy shore of Seringat Kias. You are so wrong if you think that reclaimed shores are dead as life does creep back!

Indeed, we found quite a number of burrowing sea anemones in the sand! For identification purposes, we tagged the sea anemones with labels when photographing them. This will great help matching of photos with specimens back in the lab.

Surprises from reclaimed Seringat-Kias

We were amazed at what we saw at the reclaimed island of Seringat-Kias.

Originally existed as Pulau Seringat and Kias submerged reef, these two shores and Lazarus Island has been reclaimed together with plans to make it as a premium resort for the rich. More about the developments at Ria's wildshores blog.
