Seagrasses and coral reef of BBB

On 8 Nov 2014, We revisited Beting Bemban Besar, a submerged reef off Pulau Semakau. It was the blooming season for sargassum seaweed so this made landing and departure as well as exploring reef edge difficult. I had a closer look at the seagrasses and found several types of marine life. The corals near the edge and the resident knobbly sea stars are still doing fine!

The reefy exploration of triple B

Triple B is short form for BBB or Beting Bemban Besar- a submerged reef off our southern waters beside Pulau Semakau. On this location after more than a year later, I decided to go quite deep into the water to look at the reefy parts of this huge shore.

The tide was still high while we arrive in the dark as the waters are rushing out. We explored the higher grounds first and one of the delightful finds would be a few nemos in the anemone!

Knobblies at Beting Bemban Besar

It's been more than a year since I've visited this gigantic submerged reef. This time, I was looking foward to have a look at the colony of Knobbly sea stars (Protoreaster nodosus) that Ria found on her last trip.

It was a really long walk from our alighting point and it took me a while to locate these huge stars because they are congregated at a small area in high density. In this photo are three of the knobblies!

Beting Bemban Besar is huge!

Believe me... work has swamped me that I hardly have time to blog. Sorry for this delayed post. :P

On the 3rd of April, a team of us set off from mainland before the sun was up...

And when we were approaching our destination, the sun was slowly peeking over the horizon. We were going to Beting Bemban Besar (BBB), a huge patch reef off Semakau.

Special nems of Beting Bemban Besar

Today is my first decent trip to Beting Bemban Besar, a patch reef just opposite Pulau Semakau. The last trip during January was quite a disaster because of the heavy downpour as well as the stonefish incident

We found many special anemones on the reefs today!

The most special one is this bright blue version of what seems to be the Giant carpet anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea)! We have never seen such a blue carpet anemone in Singapore before! When I first found this anemone, I was very surprised.

Happy 2010 and stonefish accident at BBB

Happy 2010 new year to all of you! Our first destination for the year is Beting Bemban Besar, a patch reef off Semakau that is only exposed at low spring tides. It's my first time there too and I was all excited to get there.

We started it off with a tide that did not recede as much as usual but finally found a nice dry patch to celebrate and take a group photo to toast for a great year to come.
