St John's shore with TJC students

Last Saturday, I back on the shores guiding a group of TJC IP students at the sandy lagoon of St John's Island.


The creeper snails were among the first organisms that greeted them on the shore. These snails are EVERYWHERE! This also provided an opportunity to learn that every inch of the shore is alive and that we should be cautious not to trample and hurt the shore.

After months of planning and preparation, this day finally arrived! This is our first time planning a shore field trip for the Bio Olympiad students. They are here to have a first hand experience in studying more about the different marine organisms found in both sandy and rocky shores.


Our destination is the natural and wild underwater world, situated right in front of the aquariums of the Underwater World of Sentosa.

Escape to Ubin on a weekday!

My school declared holiday today due to the good A-level results. As such, I brought along two of my colleagues and we escaped to Ubin as a retreat from work!


Despite the horrible thunderstorm in the early mornings, we were eventually blessed with clear weathers and a cool morning. Our first stop was Chek Jawa Boardwalk. When we reached there at about 10am, we realized that we are probably the first visitor of the day.

Surprises from reclaimed Seringat-Kias

We were amazed at what we saw at the reclaimed island of Seringat-Kias.

Originally existed as Pulau Seringat and Kias submerged reef, these two shores and Lazarus Island has been reclaimed together with plans to make it as a premium resort for the rich. More about the developments at Ria's wildshores blog.

Finally set foot on Lazarus natural shore

My previous few trips at Lazarus Island were only at the artificial sandy lagoon connecting Lazarus and Seringat. Many times while travelling to Kusu Island, I would be looking at the natural shore portion of Lazarus which is just a channel across.


Finally, I set foot at the natural shores of Lazarus during this trip. The first stretch of the shore is rather rocky.

Rainbow over Semakau

We are back at Semakau for seagrass monitoring. Despite the worrying signs of heavy rain and dark clouds in the vicinity, we proceeded to the sites as usual. It was drizzling at the beginning, which might either signal the end of rain or the beginning of a storm.


But thank God, the rain cloud went away and we were treated with a clear sky and a beautiful rainbow!

Lunar New Year Day 3: Chestnut Avenue

After a failed attempt last Saturday night due to the torrential rain, finally we made it back to our planned trip to the forest. It's my first time at Chestnut Ave! According to James, this is a site where there are lots of beetles.


My most favourite beetle find of the day will be this yellow ladybug! It is so tiny and cute, like those we saw in cartoon or drawings.
